Why Brands Aren’t Booking You, and How to Fix It
You're doing everything you’re supposed to do. Your portfolio is up, your website looks great, and you’re even putting yourself out there and pitching. But no one’s booking you, and that can start to feel personal, like maybe you’re the exception to the rule, like maybe you’re just not good enough. I get it. I see so many talented photographers in exactly this position - putting in the work, doing what they were told would lead to success, and getting nothing in return.
But the truth is that it’s not about how hard you’re working. It’s about strategy. There are a few common patterns that trip up even the most skilled photographers, and once you understand them, you can begin to shift how you show up and what your work is saying to potential clients.
Portfolio Mistakes That Repel Brands
❌ Too General
Showing too many styles (weddings, portraits, fashion, e-comm, etc.).
While versatility feels valuable, it creates confusion:
“I don’t know what they specialize in.” → Hard no.
❌ Too Trendy
Trying to emulate what's currently popular can backfire.
Your work ends up blending in, not standing out.
✅ The Fix
Brands book distinctive photographers with a clear POV.
Ask yourself:
What do I want to be known for?
What feeling does my work evoke?
What’s the consistent line through my work?
Your unique visual voice should be instantly recognizable.
Pricing Problems That Undermine Your Value
❌ Undercharging
Photographers often start low to seem appealing.
But too cheap raises red flags:
“Why are they so cheap? Are they inexperienced? Unreliable?”
✅ Higher Rates = Better Clients
High-quality brands want value, not bargains.
Higher prices attract clients who:
Respect your work.
Pay on time.
Offer creative freedom.
If They Ghost You After Seeing Your Rates?
“They were never going to value you anyway.”
✅ Action Step
Ask: What do I actually need to charge to make this worth it?
Adjust over time with confidence.
Pitching Problems
❌ Not Pitching at All
Waiting for brands to “find” you is passive and limiting.
❌ Overly Polished, Robotic Emails
Sounding too corporate or formal drains all personality.
Brands hire people, not emails.
✅ The Fix
Start genuine, human conversations.
Focus on:
Their needs, not your résumé.
Short, punchy, value-driven messages.
Relationship-building - not a job application.
And if this all feels overwhelming, that’s exactly what my new programme, The Fashion Photography Club, is designed to help with. It’s a 12-month, done-with-you programme that walks photographers through everything they need to book their first (or next) dream client. It includes structured curriculum, regular support, portfolio reviews, and guidance on everything from strategy to mindset. The goal? Creative freedom and financial stability - without the second guessing.

Because ultimately, this is the shift: it’s not about doing more. It’s about doing the right things, with clarity, confidence, and intention.
