Overcoming Fear on Large Fashion Shoots with Planning, Confidence and Creativity

Have you ever held back from creating work? Playing it safe, sticking to what feels comfortable, and avoiding challenges because of fear? You’re not alone.

I want to share a personal story. Early in my career, I was absolutely terrified of large groups of people on shoots. This fear came from a history of serious bullying, which left me hesitant around groups and overly focused on people-pleasing.

For years, I avoided large crews at all costs. I preferred small shoots with just a model and a makeup artist, keeping everything low key. But I quickly realized that staying in my comfort zone would prevent me from growing as a photographer.

Taking Small Steps Toward Confidence

I began taking gradual steps to overcome my fear. I started working with slightly bigger teams, welcoming collaboration and input. With each shoot, I felt more comfortable directing and taking charge of the set.

The real turning point? Planning. I discovered that thorough preparation was the key to feeling confident and in control. I started creating detailed shot lists, lighting setups, moodboards, and posing guides.

Planning Gives You Control

By investing time in preparation, I could confidently lead larger teams. Today, I regularly direct shoots with 15–20 people, and it all comes down to knowing exactly what needs to happen and communicating it clearly.

Fear fades when you have a roadmap. When you know your vision and the steps to achieve it, you can focus on creativity rather than anxiety.

Your Turn

If you want to push past fear and take your photography to new heights, start with planning. Break your shoots down into manageable steps. Prepare your team, your shots, and your ideas in advance. Confidence comes from knowing you’re ready.

Large shoots aren’t intimidating, they’re an opportunity to bring your creative vision to life. With careful preparation, you can lead with ease, inspire your team, and create work you’re proud of.
