How I Became Good With Money as a Photographer (And How You Can Too)

You Can Be Creative and Good With Money! Here’s How I Got There:

Let’s be real: if you’re a creative, especially a photographer, chances are you’ve told yourself at some point, “I’m just not good with money.”

I know I did. For years, anything related to finances made me want to run and hide. Pricing? Avoided it. Budgeting? Nope. Tax season? Pure dread.

But here’s the truth: that whole “creatives are bad with money” narrative? It’s a myth. And once I stopped believing it, everything changed.

The Turning Point: A New Year’s Resolution That Stuck

Back in 2017, I set a simple but powerful New Year’s resolution: “Learn how to be good with money.” I was tired of feeling out of control and telling myself I wasn’t capable. Sure, math wasn’t easy for me, but I am organized, and I love learning. So I decided to lean into that.

That resolution kicked off a personal financial education journey that totally transformed my business, and my life.

The Book That Changed Everything

The biggest breakthrough came when I read Profit First by Mike Michalowicz.

If you haven’t read it, please do. The core idea is simple: before you spend anything in your business, set aside profit first, not what’s left over. It teaches you how to organize your finances in a way that ensures your business is actually profitable from day one. This method clicked for me. It’s easy, actionable, and fits perfectly with how my brain works. I now use Starling Bank, which lets me set up different “pots” for my income. Like tax, profit, personal pay, and other savings. It’s made everything from everyday money management to tax time completely stress-free.

Doing the Inner Work: Money Mindset Matters

But getting good at money wasn’t just about spreadsheets and savings pots.

In 2023, I dove deep into money mindset work. I started uncovering my own limiting beliefs about wealth, success, and what I deserved to earn. Once I understood those money blocks and began to dismantle them, I didn’t just start earning more, I began keeping more of what I made, too.

That inner shift has been just as powerful as any financial system I’ve adopted.

Creatives, It’s Time to Break the Starving Artist Myth

As artists and creatives, we’re often fed this story: that we’re “not business-minded,” that we’re messy with money, that making a living from our craft means living on the edge.

But that belief is holding so many talented photographers back from the success they could be having.
