Are You Shooting Memorable Images? Here’s How to Make Your Work Stand Out

As photographers, we all want our work to be remembered. But here’s the truth: connection is what makes an image memorable. Without it, even technically perfect photos can feel flat and forgettable.

If your goal is to work with producers, marketing directors, or major brands, you need images that don’t just look good - they make people feel something. When your work resonates, clients remember you, trust you, and want to bring you on for future campaigns.

Here’s how to make your photography unforgettable:

1. Play With Depth of Field and Foreground

Adding layers to your images creates a sense of depth and intrigue. Positioning an object in the foreground, like branches, windows, or other natural elements, can make viewers feel like they’re peeking into a private moment.

This simple trick, borrowed from documentary photography, adds mystery and draws your audience into the scene. Think of it as creating a “voyeuristic” layer that makes your images more engaging.

2. Give Your Model an Action

Static poses can feel stiff and lifeless. Encourage movement: ask your model to walk, laugh, spin, or interact with their surroundings.

Action brings energy and authenticity to your shots. Images that feel natural and spontaneous are far more likely to capture attention and leave a lasting impression.

3. Be Harmonious With Colour

Colour is one of the easiest ways to create a visually pleasing image. Sticking to a cohesive palette - soft blues and whites, warm pinks, or complementary colour pairings - guides the viewer’s eye and creates mood.

Consistency in colour makes your work feel intentional, polished, and professional. If you want to level up, studying colour theory can make a huge difference.

Plan a Storyline

This is my personal favourite tip: start with a story. Imagine a fictional character and their world. Who are they? What’s their environment like?

For example, in a shoot I created for ELLE Croatia, I imagined a woman living off the land by a river. This concept shaped everything, from the props to the poses, the mood, and the lighting.

A story gives your shoot purpose and depth. It transforms your photography from “nice pictures” to compelling visual storytelling.

Why Planning Matters

For years, I resisted planning my shoots - I thought improvising on the day was more creative. The truth? I just didn’t know how to plan effectively.

Once I embraced the process, everything changed. I developed a system to organize and prepare shoots, and it’s helped me:

  • Produce work I’m genuinely proud of

  • Book dream clients I never thought possible

  • Approach each project with confidence and clarity
